IMPACT STORY: Schools in Angus and Aberdeenshire, NEWSolutions CIC

NEWSolutions CIC uses The Decider Life Skills to support children and adults in the community.

Over the past 3 years, NEWSolutions has delivered Decider Skills to more than 800 children aged 8–10 across schools in Angus and Aberdeenshire.

Here’s what Carole & Rachael (Therapeutic Resource Workers) say about the impact of The Decider Skills.

“The impact has been incredible — children are learning to recognise emotions, manage anger, and make positive choices using the Decider Skills language. We’ve also used the Life Skills in adult mental health and confidence-building groups, where participants have reported reduced anxiety and greater self-belief.

One of our most loved members of the team is Colin the Crow, our Decider Skills puppet who helps bring the skills to life for younger children. Colin plays a big role in our sessions — helping children learn STOPP, Opposite Action, and other skills in a fun, memorable way. You’ll see him mentioned frequently in the attached report, which includes feedback from pupils at a local primary school about what they enjoyed most about learning the Decider Skills.

Thank you for creating such a practical and empowering programme — it’s been a privilege to see the difference it makes.”

CASE STUDY

Improving emotion regulation and communication for children: A pre-post trial of a school-based approach

Evidence suggesting increased mental health and wellbeing problems with children gives a rationale for developing and delivering proactive interventions. The Decider Skills is a framework that aims to teach children skills to manage their emotions and wellbeing. This study looked at whether students who participate in the programme as a whole-school approach would demonstrate an increased ability to recognise and better manage their emotions as rated by themselves, their parents, and their teachers.

TESTIMONIAL

Le Rocquier School, Jersey

"We enjoy using the amazing Decider Skills in our ELSA sessions always as they are very useful to reach secondary students in their scenarios to empower them to cope. I have also used students of a whole class to act out the skills for each other in year 7. It was great fun and a big win on the feedback forms. We were able to get counselling sorted for a student that reached out for help on the feedback form - for this reason I want you to know how incorporating the Decider Skills in our ELSA work is helpful to students and adults alike, so thank you. Thank you for all the good you enable." Chena Dingle, ELSA Practitioner & Teaching Assistant
