Introducing Decider Skills into dental practice
After attending an introductory session, a Senior Dental Officer (SDO) recognised the potential of The Decider Skills for children who struggle with dental visits. She completed the full training and began using the skills in her clinic, particularly with anxious or highly active children.
The results were immediate.
“The Senior Dental Officer immediately started to use the approach with children attending the clinic with great success. However, the use of the skills expanded into day to day life, at both work and home.”
How the skills helped in the clinic
Supporting an anxious child
A child who was struggling with treatment was asked which skill might help him cope. He chose IT WILL PASS and BREATHE, leading to a calmer, smoother appointment for both child and dentist.
Helping an active child engage
Another child was very active and unable to focus. When asked which skill could help, he chose OPPOSITE ACTION, supported by BREATHE. He became still and cooperative, allowing treatment to proceed successfully.
These moments show how simple, shared skills can empower children to regulate their emotions—even in a high‑anxiety setting like the dental chair.
Skills that extend beyond the clinic
The SDO soon found herself using the skills in many areas of her life:
- As a colleague: Skills such as STOPP and OBSERVE supported clearer, calmer communication with staff and parents.
- As a friend: DO ONE THING – 20 MINS became a practical tool to help friends manage anxiety.
- As a mum: The grounding skill RIGHT NOW (5‑4‑3‑2‑1) helped her young person regulate emotions and avoid impulsive reactions.
Results: practical skills with wide‑ranging impact
This case study shows how The Decider Life Skills:
- Help anxious and active children engage more calmly in dental treatment
- Improve communication and reflection among staff
- Provide practical tools that support wellbeing at work, at home and in everyday life
A simple, shared set of skills has made dental visits easier, communication clearer and emotional regulation more accessible—proving their value far beyond the clinic.
